General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in August
August is transitional time between summer and autumn in northern Vietnam, transitional time between the hot season and the rainy season in the Central Coast of Vietnam. There is often heavy rain in the North of Vietnam, especially in the far northern mountains.
As the Southeasterly Wind is more active, all of the North of Vietnam is to have more days with nice temperatures. And the Northwest of Vietnam is almost not under impact of the foehn wind. In August, the provinces of Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau are more likely to have extremely pleasant temperatures.
It is possible that there are typhoons or tropical depressions which may have impact in Northern Vietnam and North of the Central Coast. The typhoons often cause torrential rain in the far Northern Mountain which may cause landslides, rockslides or flash floods. Under impact of a typhoon or tropical depression, cruises on Halong Bay are banned.
In the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam, August is the rainy season. Traveling in these two regions in August you are to expect a daily rain which is sometimes quite heavy. Due to bad sewage systems that streets in cities are temporarily flooded which disrupts traffic.
And in the Central Highlands heavy rain may cause flash floods and landslides. Thanks to the rain that the temperatures are extremely pleasant in the Central Highlands and mostly nice and pleasant in the South of Vietnam.
Weather Dangers: Be extra cautious to flash floods or landslides, rock slides if you have to travel in these regions
- Far northern mountains of Vietnam, especially Route 6 at the Thung Khe Pass in Mai Chau, Hoa Binh Province.
- Route 32 in Mu Cang Chai (especially between Nga Ba Kim and Mu Cang Chai Township).
- Than Uyen District (Lai Chau Province).
- The Khanh Le Pass between Da Lat City (Lam Dong) and Nha Trang City (Khanh Hoa).
- The Bao Loc Pass between Da Lat (Lam Dong Province) and Dong Nai Province.
- Namphao (Laos, Bolikhamxay Province) – Cau Treo (Vietnam, Ha Tinh Province): it may be flooded and travel on this route is not possible.
- The provinces at the base of the Central Highlands: Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai (Cat Tien National Park)… Heavy rain may causes floods in these places.
First 10 Days of August 2023
At the end of July and beginning of August there was torrential rain in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam which caused fatal landslides on the Bao Loc Pass, high water levels and floods in Binh Phuoc and around the area of the Cat Tien National Park.
There was continual rain in the far Northern of Vietnam at the beginning of August 2023 and dangerous rock slides at the Thung Khe Pass between Tan Lac District and Mai Chau District of Hoa Binh Province.

Second 10 Days of August 2023
The second 10 days of August 2023 marked the continuing heat strike in the Central Coast of Vietnam, continual rain in all of Northern Vietnam after brief pause in the lowland.
High recorded temperatures on 10-August: Đô Lương (Nghệ An), Hương Khê (Hà Tĩnh), Đông Hà (Quảng Trị) 37.2oC, Huế City 38.6oC, Đà Nẵng 37.6oC, Tam Kỳ (Quảng Nam) 38.6oC, Ba Tơ (Quảng Ngãi) 38.0oC, Hoài Nhơn (Bình Định) 37.6oC, Tuy Hòa (Phú Yên) 38.6oC,… Humidity was around 45-55%.

Last 10 Days of August 2023
In the last decade of August 2023, the North had more rain, especially in the far northern mountains. The lowland of Northern Vietnam had rain alternated by cloudy and sunny days. The temperatures are pleasant in the North. Also, the North seemed to have to first spell of mild Northeasterly Monsoon (Winer Monsoon) on the last days of August: Autumn is just around quite earlier than usual!!!
The Central Coast of Vietnam continued to have high temperatures and mostly dry days.
The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam continued to have rain and heavy rain. Long-lasting rain caused temporary flood in Bao Loc City of Lam Dong Province.
