Dien Bien Province is pushed to the furthermost Northwest of Vietnam in between Son La and Lai Chau. The province is known for wild mountains, ethnic minorities and the famed Dien Bien Phu Battle.
Geography
Dien Bien is bounded to the northeast, east and southeast by Lai Chau and Son La. The province shares a border of over 40km long with China to the northwest and a border of over 414km long with Laos to the west.
The terrain of Dien Bien ranges from 200 to 1,800m above sea level of which the majority is mountainous. There is the flat valley of Muong Thanh at Dien Bien Phu and the rock plateau of Tua Chua (130km northeast of Dien Bien Phu). The terrain is higher to the north and lower to the south. Most highest mountain peaks in Dien Bien are in Muong Nhe District.
Weather and Climate
Dien Bien has a tropical monsoon climate on high altitude with dry season from December through April. The lowest temperatures are found in the period between December and February. The highest temperatures are in the period between April and September. From late March through July, Dien Bien is constantly under impact of high temperature air troughs and the foehn wind.
As there are ranges of high mountains blocking the north and northeast of Dien Bien that the temperatures in the winter time is slightly higher than in neighboring provinces. It is also drier in Dien Bien all year compared to other places in Vietnam.
The averaged annuals rainfall found in the provinces range from 1,500-2,500mm per annum.

1/ Dien Bien Phu City
Dien Bien Phu is a name of a famed battle and is the name of the provincial capital of Dien Bien Province. We have in-depth guides to both the battle and the city. 2/ Muong Phang Viet Minh Headquarters during the Dien Bien Phu Battle
Muong Phang is a well hidden valley 18km northeast of Dien Bien City. The valley is only less than 10km from the Dien Bien Phu Battle via a beeline and it was where the headquarters of the Viet Minh during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign was located. From Pu Huot Mountain General Giap could observe the progress of the battle and issued suitable commands.
3/ Pa Khoang Lake
The Pa Khoang Lake at Muong Phang offers relaxing moments by the lakeside, lovely boat trip and refreshing bicycle experience under the foliage of the forest.
4/ Tham Pua Cave
The cave is in Tuan Giao District, 60km northeast of Dien Bien Phu City. The cave was the first headquarters of the Viet Minh when the Dien Bien Phu Battle was about to start. The cave is amid a heavenly landscape which offers wonderful walking and trekking tours.
5/ The Pha Din Pass
The high mountain pass of 32km connecting Son La Province and Dien Bien Province offers views of stunning natural landscape.
How to get there and away
1/ By air
There are daily flights between the Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi and Dien Bien Airport in Dien Bien Phu. The airport in Dien Bien Phu is 3km from the city center.
2/ By road
There are decent roads to Dien Bien Province from Laos (via Tay Trang International Border Crossing), National Road 6 from Hanoi and Son La, National Road 12 from Lai Chau Province.
