The Bac Son Valley is well hidden behind ranges of limestone mountains which once made it an important base for local guerrilla against the French colonialists. Nowadays Bac Son is a popular tourist attraction for discerning photographers only. Most foreign visitors to Vietnam do not travel to this valley.
What To See, Tourist Attractions at the Bac Son Valley
1/ The Bac Son Valley
The valley is composed of limestone mountains, colorful rice fields and ethnic villages of the Tay and the Nung. Local farmers do not start cultivating their rice crops simultaneously but with different delays which makes the rice fields here of different colors for most of the year!
2/ The Na Lay Mountain
This is a high limestone mountain which allows you to get panoramic views of the Bac Son Valley. From here you are to get the best angles for your photos!
3/ Ethnic Villages
There are different Tay and Nung Villages in the valley that offers meals and overnight stay. Staying with the locals is a great opportunity to learn about their daily life and traditional cultures.

What To Do, Tours to the Bac Son Valley
The Bac Son Valley is a good place for cycling and for travel photography. Certainly if you are interested in ethnic culture, this is also a good spot to learn about from engaging into the locals’ daily life.
Those who love to learn about the recent history of Vietnam may know that Bac Son was the birthplace of a very strong local resistance movement against the French. There is the Bac Son Museum and the Tam Canh Pass for you to visit and learn more.

How to Get There
1/ From Hanoi to Bac Son
We can travel by Route 3 from Hanoi to Thai Nguyen then turn into Route 1B from Thai Nguyen to Bac Son. This route is especially beautiful with ranges of mountains and rice fields on both sides of the road all the way from Thai Nguyen to Bac Son. This route iw 170km long.
Alternatively, we can follow Route 1A from Hanoi past Bac Ninh, Bac Giang to Tan Thanh Commune, Huu Lung District of Lang Son Province. Then turn into the provincial road of 243. This route is less scenic than the other route but it goes via the Huu Lien Nature Reserve with vast green pastures and valleys, another great tourist attraction.
2/ From Lang Son City
There are three routes from Lang Son City to the Bac Son Valley. We can travel via Route 1B which is the closest route, the distance via this route is 95km. Else, there are two other routes: one goes via Route 279 at Dong Mo Town then follow Route 1B at Van Quan Town, this route is 120km long. Another route of the same distance with the latter is to travel from Lang Son back to Tan Thanh (Huu Lung), then turn right into the provincial road 243 for the Bac Son Valley.
