The Bang Lang Stork Sanctuary is in Thoi Binh 1 Hamlet, Thuan An Ward, Thot Not District, Can Tho City. The site is by the Hau River, 50-60km (depending on the routes) northwest of Can Tho City center.
What To See at the Bird Sanctuary of Bang Lang
The bird sanctuary covers 16,500m2 and is home to 20 species of storks with over 300,000 of stork individuals. The bird park was created naturally in 1983 when several storks came here to take shelter. A specially protected zone was demarcated and expanded as it is nowadays.
The name of the bird sanctuary originates from lagerstroemia , more commonly known as crape myrtle trees, which offer blossoms on the riverside of the Mekong River in Thot Not. There is an observatory 8m high.
The Best Time to Visit The Stork Sanctuary
The best time to visit Bang Lang Stork Sanctuary is in the rainy season, especially in August – September to December when there is plenty of food for the storks in the Mekong Delta.
The best moments to visit the stork sanctuary is either in the early morning (0600-0700 A.M) or late afternoon (after 17:00 hours) when the storks all come home to roost. Their noise stirs up the whole otherwise completely quiet region. On a beautiful day, we can see the storks spread their wings which cover the whole sky around the bird park, a spectacular scene.
What To Note Before and When Visiting the Bird Sanctuary of Bang Lang
The bird sanctuary is a patch of dense woods teeming with insects, and you had better be prepared with insect repellents, long-sleeved shirts and long pants. The paths are uneven and better avoid high-heeled shoes. The smells of the storks and their droppings are not that great either.
Those of you who love to observe the storks clearly you may want to bring your own binoculars. Cameras should have telephoto lenses for more stunning photos of the wild.
How To Get There
From Can Tho City proceed to the riverside and follow Route 91 which travels along the Mekong River all the way to Bang Lang Bridge where there is a left turn leading to the bird park.
