The nature reserve has 1,400 hectares of cajeput forest stretching from west of the Hau River (Bassac River, Song Hau) to the area close to Kien Giang Province.
The Lung Ngoc Hoang Nature Reserve was established to protect and to conduct researches on the diverse ecological system of the forested wetland in the area. There are 206 animal and bird species in the nature reserve such as Chinese egrets, yellow box turtles, otters, weasels, foxes...
At the nature reserve, there is a fresh water crocodile among the species specially protected. The crocodiles here weigh up to over 200kg each.

The Lung Ngoc Hoang Nature Reserve is 50km south of Can Tho and can easily be reached by road or by waterways from Can Tho.
