Hanoi is 680km north of Hue. Hue was the capital city of Vietnam in the 19th century and Hanoi had been the capital several decades before that and is the capital city of Vietnam now. Both cities have traditional atmosphere but you can feel the distinct difference between them. The cuisines are different too. Both are must-see tourist attractions and there is a variety of means of transportation between the two cities.

By air
There are several flights from Hue to Hanoi every day. The flight duration is 1 hour. Hue Airport is 20km out of the city and Noi Bai Airport is 40km from Hanoi. There are buses and taxis for transport between the airports and the cities.
By private car
The road trip by private car from Hue to Hanoi passes the DMZ with several historical sites, several beaches and the famed cave of Phong Nha Ke Bang if you wish to visit. A car trip also passes the idyllic countryside of Ninh Binh. The road is in good conditions and the traffic can be very busy.
By local bus
There are tourist buses which depart Hue for Hanoi every day from the city center; there are several local buses departing Hue Southern Station for Hanoi. The travel time is about 14-16 hours. Most of the buses travel overnight.
By train
There are many trains from Hue to Hanoi with soft seat cabins and sleeper cabins. The train journeys take 14-15 hours.
By motorbike
Travel to Hanoi from Hue by motorbike is a real adventure which is not for everybody. The long journey and busy traffic can be extremely dangerous. The trip should take over 2 days and it is recommended to overnight at Dong Hoi, Ha Tinh, or Vinh. There are several tourist attractions to visit on the way.
