Go Cong is a town in Tien Giang Province now and it had an interesting long history which is mostly not known or has been forgotten in Vietnam nowadays.
After conquering Vietnam, the French consolidated the two villages of Thuan Tac and Thuan Ngai into the City Village in 1885. This was the first place in South Vietnam (Cochinchina) established as a city where the French built their colonial administration in Vietnam. The French held quite some activities here: Go Cong was where the first bike race was held in Vietnam by the French...
The name Go Cong means the Land of Peacock since the shape of the peninsula (or island???) looks like a Peacock. The name was from the time of King Minh Mang (in reign during 1820 – 1841).
Go Cong was a separate province several times in the past but now it is within the Tien Giang Province.
Tourist Attractions, What To See
1/ Nha Doc Phu Hai – former Residence of Nguyen Van Hai, the Chief of the Province
The house was built in 1860 and the ownership changed a few times through inheritance.
In 1895-1900 the house was rebuilt by Nguyen Van Hai, chief of the province hence the name.
The rebuilt house has blended style of the East and the West with lots of precious wood and wood carvings as ornaments.
The house is conserved as a museum nowadays.
2/ Dinh Trung
The Communal House was built in 1930 and once it was known under the name Communal House of the City Village (Dinh Thanh Pho).
3/ Dinh Tham Bien (also called Dinh Tinh Truong, Office of the Chief of the Province)
Dinh Chanh Tham Bien was built by the French in 1885 with all construction materials imported from France. The building was the headquarters of the French Administration in the province-like land of Go Cong.
Under the French times, before and during the Vietnam (American) War, the building was the seat of the local government. But it has been deserted for quite some time from the late 1980s.
4/ Truong Cong Dinh Mausoleum
Truong Cong Dinh was from Go Cong. Truong Cong Dinh held an unsuccessful resistance against the French in 1864 and he committed suicide after the failure.
5/ Tan Thanh Sea
The sea is 15km from Go Cong Town. The beach is not so great but seafood is great and the air is just fresh! Besides, there are quite some activities by local fishing communities that may be of interest to you.
How to get there
Go Cong is 40km east of My Tho and 70km south of Ho Chi Minh City.
