The Lo Lo People
The Lo Lo is among the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam and their population as a census in 2019 has less than 5,000 people inhabiting in the far northern mountains in Vietnam: Ha Giang (Dong Van Plateau), Cao Bang (Bao Lac District), Lao Cai (Muong Khuong District).
The Lo Lo People at Lung Cu live in houses with walls made by pounded-earth of 50-60cm thick. This helps to keep warm inside given the cool climate and cold winter in the Dong Van Rock Plateau. Each house has three parts: to the right is the area for elderly members of the family, to the left is for younger members of the family and the middle is reserved for ceremonies and official occasions. The attic is for agricultural products and now also for visiting guests.
The Lo Lo People have their own daily costumes which are well ornamented. A girl starts learning to make clothes at 10 years of age. They have to practice with dying the fabric, make it into clothes and embroider the clothes. Mostly the embroidery motifs are from the mountains, birds, rice terraces. A Lo Lo girl could have a couple of meticulously-made traditional clothes which are used for special occasions: wedding, village festivals, New Year...
Visiting a Lo Lo family we can find display of a traditional gong of the Lo Lo People which is unique in decorations and which is used for official occasion of the village only.
How to get there
The Lo Lo Chai Village is 1km south of the Flag Pole of Lung Cu and 25km north of Dong Van Old Town, Ha Giang Province. From Dong Van Old Town, we can get to Lung Cu via Ma Le or via Lung Tao (by going back toward the Sa Phin Valley, or Residence of Vuong Chi Sinh – Hmong King in the Dong Van Plateau). Both routes offer great landscapes.
