The Hon Ba Nature Reserve is 60km southwest of Nha Trang City by road, 30km from Nha Trang via beeline. The nature reserve stretches in the territory of Khanh Vinh, Khanh Son, Cam Lam and Dien Khanh Districts of Khanh Hoa Province. Hon Ba Nature Reserve has nothing to to with Nha Trang.

Hon Ba means the Lady Mountain, something similar to Thap Ba in Nha Trang which is dedicated to Goddess Thien Y An Na (or Poh Nagar) from the Cham culture.
Hon Ba Nha Trang is a name promoted by travel and tour businesses in Nha Trang who want to associate the nature reserve to the city’s name so that tourists who would like to travel to the nature reserve would book services from them. Some Nha Trang-based businesses do business at Hon Ma violate the law on land destroying the natural ecosystem at Hon Ba Nature Reserve. Some have been fined. It is good to boycott these businesses if you plan to travel here.
History
Hon Ba Mountain was discovered by a Swiss-French bacteriologist Yersin. In 1915 Yersin moved over here to live and take care of the medicinal plants (Cinchona ledgeriana, imported from South America) to extract quinine treating malaria.
Hon Ba is the name of the mountain where the nature reserve was established in 2005. The nature reserve originally covers an area of nearly 21,000 hectares. The nature reserve is on the elevations of 500m to nearly 1,600m above sea level. Initial researches show 592 vascular plant species and 274 animal, reptile and amphibian species present at the Hon Ba Nature Reserve. These figures may change by further researches in the future.
Weather and Climate, Best Time to Visit
Hon Ba Mountain is has a tropical monsoon climate but with variations on high altitude and terrain: dry season from January through July and rainy season from August through November. But it is humid and wet normally on the mountain. And it rains most of the year (252 days/ year) at Hon Ba due to that the high altitude mountains block clouds from the ocean.
From September through October there may be typhoons and it is recommended not to make trips to the Hon Ba Mountain at this time.
What to see, Tourist Attractions at the Hon Ba Nature Reserve
1/ Suoi Dau Reservoir
The man-made yet scenic reservoir at the base of the Hon Ba Mountain that you counter before pulling uphill to the mountain peak.
2/ Yersin former house
The house where Yersin lived and conducted his researches on medicine.
3/ Suoi Nguon Waterfall
The waterfall is 19km from the peak of Hon Ba Mountain with lovely landscape all around and relaxing atmosphere. It is possible to go swimming in the water body at the base of the waterfall.

Most people visit Hon Ba for its pristine environment and cool temperatures, especially when it is scorching heat in the lowlands. At Hon Ba you can go hiking or relaxed in the lovely atmosphere.
How To Get There
From Nha Trang City, follow Route 1A southward for 20km to Suoi Cat Commune, Cam Lam District, then turn right (near the Suoi Dau Reservoir) for 37km uphill to the peak of Hon Ba. The second leg of the journey is on a tiny, tortuous, slippery and steep road.
