1/ By air
There are daily flights from Hanoi to Dong Hoi City and Hue Phu Bai Airport, the flight time is 1 hour 30 minutes. Dong Hoi City is 100km north of Dong Ha via Route 1 and Hue Phu Bai Airport is 100km south of Dong Ha City via Route 1. There are several buses commuting Dong Hoi - Dong Ha and Hue – Dong Ha daily.
2/ By private car
The road trip by private car from Hanoi to Vietnam's DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is 600km via Route 1 which is in great conditions nowadays. The trip takes 12-13 hours. Alternatively you can take travel to Vietnam’s DMZ via Ho Chi Minh Road (formerly Ho Chi Minh Trail). Via the latter, you’ll access the area from the west with the once famous battlefields: Khe Sanh, Rockpile, Ta Con, Lang Vay...
3/ By local bus
There are some tourist buses which depart Hanoi for Vietnam's DMZ every evening near the Old Quarter of Hanoi. Alternatively there are several local buses departing Hanoi for Vietnam's DMZ every day from various bus stations: My Dinh, Nuoc Ngam, Yen Nghia. The ticket costs are from 350,000VND-450,000VND.
4/ By train
There are daily overnight trains from Hanoi to Dong Ha City with soft seat cabins and sleeper cabins. The train journey takes 14 hours. Dong Train Station is 2km from the city center.
5/ By motorbike
Travel to Vietnam's DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) from Hanoi by motorbike is an adventure of a lifetime which takes 2-3 days. The road is very busy from Hanoi to Ninh Binh and traffic gets better after that. Taking Route 1, you’ll travel by the coast of Vietnam to the east; taking the Ho Chi Minh Trail, you’ll pass through forests and mountains which made Vietnam famous during the war.
6/ By bicycle
It is possible to travel to Vietnam's DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) from Hanoi by bicycle but it requires 6-7 days. It is recommended to break the journey with overnight stay at Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Ha Tinh, Dong Hoi or Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park.
