The Dau Go Cave is located on the Dau Go Island, 7km or 30 minutes boat trip from the shore. The Dau Go Island is the closest island of those on Halong Bay to the shore.
Travel Guide to the Dau Go Cave, Halong Bay
The Dau Go Cave is 27m above sea level and to visit the cave you have to climb several steps uphill. From the entrance we could have great views of Halong Bay and Halong City.
Legend
The name Dau Go literally means wood scraps. It is said that when the Mongol Yuan from China invaded Vietnam in the 13th century they had supply boats traveling via Halong Bay. General Tran Hung Dao – Chief Commander of the Royal Army ordered the troops to make hidden traps composed of pointed wooden stakes which were driven into the rivers between Quang Ninh and Hai Phong now.
And the Dau Go Cave was the workshop the troops whittled timbers and turned them into pointed stakes before transferring them to the trap sites. Several wood scraps left afterwards that local fishermen called it the Dau Go Cave.
Architecture
The cave interior is about 5000 square meters and 12m high. There are three chambers inside the cave: the outer one is mossy with lots of swallows. There are huge rocks, stalagmites and stalactites from floor to ceiling which look fluid and which separate the outer chamber from the two inner ones which are quite hidden.
The second chamber entrance is quite small without much light and the chamber walls and ceiling have chalky colors, no moss here as the outer one. There are several magnificent natural decorations on the walls and ceiling.
The third chamber is pitched dark without light leaking through from the cave entrance. It is the smallest chamber of all and with a narrow path for visitors to walk around. Water keep dripping down for million of years here and it is quite wet during rainy times.
How long it takes to visit the cave
It takes about 1 hour to 1 hour and a half to visit this cave alone. And it may be quite a hike for those who do not love daily physical exercise.
