Kon Plong Nature Reserve is in Kon Plong District of Kon Tum Province, north of the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
Geography
The Kon Plong Nature Reserve has the Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve close to the north, Kon Ka Kinh National Park close to the south, and the Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve adjacent to the southeast.
The whole district is on the Kon Plong (also known as Mang Den) Plateau with averaged altitude of 1,200m above sea level, 80% of the terrain of the district is from 1,000-1,500m above sea level. Kon Plong is 60km northeast of Kon Tum provincial capital.
Weather and Climate
Kon Plong Nature Reserve has a tropical monsoon climate on high altitudes. The temperatures are cool all year round of 16-25oC.
The rainy season is from April through November and the dry season is from December through March. The best time to visit Kon Plong Nature Reserve is during the dry season. It rains heavily in late September, October and November.
Flora and Fauna
In 2016, with international assistance, 500 gray-shanked langurs were spotted and later 100 yellow-cheeked gibbons were seen. Initial researches have found 121 animals and birds species in 2019 by camera. Other endangered and critically endangered species spotted include:
- Ownston’ palm civet (Chrotogale owstoni),
- Vietnamese crested argus (Rheinardia ocellata),
- Asian small-clawed otter (Rai Ca Vuot Be, Aonyx cinereus),
- Golden-winged Laughingthrush (Garrulax ngoclinhensis, Khướu Ngọc Linh),
- Asian black bear (Gấu ngựa, Ursus thibetanus, Ursus tibetanus),
- Pygmy slow loris (Cu li nhỏ, Nycticebus pygmaeus)
People and Population
The region is inhabited mostly by the ethnic groups: Xo Dang (Two sub-groups: N’nam and Ka Kong), H’re and Kinh. The former two groups account for more than 80% of the population.
How To Get There
Kon Plong Nature Reserve is 60km northeast of Kon Tum City via Route 24. The coastline of Quang Ngai is 120-150km east of Kon Plong via Route 24.
