Vietnam Weather in January
January is winter in northern Vietnam, about to be the end of the rainy season in the Central Region (Central Coast) of Vietnam, dry season in the Central Highlands and South Vietnam.
1/The North of Vietnam normally receives successive spells of northeasterly monsoon which causes the cold winter in the region. In between the spells of monsoon the North may also have westerly winds and easterly winds when the cold monsoon weakens (between spells). The meeting of these winds cause light rains in the North for a couple of days each time.
When the dominant northeasterly monsoon is strong, then it is cold and dry. The temperatures are from below 10oC to 24oC; it could be freezing cold in the mountains. Mau Son Mountain (in Lang Son), Sapa (in Lao Cai) and Lai Chau are the places that likely to have snow during this time.
2/The North of the Central Region of Vietnam (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh) shares similar weather pattern with the North. The difference is that it may rain more in the North of the Central Region which is mostly attributed to the high mountains to the west and that some of the northeasterly monsoons blow via the coast which accumulate moisture when they come to the North of the Central Region.
Also, the temperatures are a bit higher here as the winds absorb heat on its way traveling southwards and southwestwards. The temperatures are usually 14-26oC.
3/The Central Coast of Vietnam (Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan) is about to be the end of the rainy season. Dry days are alternated with rainy days. The rains are normally much lighter than in October-December though. The temperatures are 20-29oC; it tends to be warmer to the south of the Hai Van Pass than that to the north.
4/The Central Highlands of Vietnam enjoys dry season in January. The temperatures are 14-30oC in most areas; 13-23oC in Da Lat.
5/The South of Vietnam has entered the dry season in January. The temperatures are 23-34oC.
