General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in September
September is autumn in northern Vietnam, beginning of the rainy season in the Central Coast of Vietnam, high rainy season in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam.
As the Southeasterly Wind is more active, all of the North of Vietnam is to have more days with nice temperatures. There is often heavy rain in the North of Vietnam, especially in the far northern mountains.
It is possible that there are typhoons or tropical depressions which may have impact in Northern Vietnam and North of the Central Coast. The typhoons often cause torrential rain in the far Northern mountains which may cause landslides, rock slides or flash floods. Under impact of a typhoon or tropical depression, cruises on Halong Bay are prohibited.
The Central Coast may undergo transitional time at the beginning of September meaning warm temperatures alternated by heavy rain. Streets in cities are often flooded temporarily nowadays and it is advised not to take part in traffic when the streets are flooded.
In the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam, September is the high rainy season. Traveling in these two regions in September you are to expect a daily rain which is sometimes quite heavy. Due to bad sewage systems that streets in cities are temporarily flooded which disrupts traffic.
And in the Central Highlands heavy rain may cause flash floods and landslides. Thanks to the frequent and long-lasting rain that the temperatures are extremely pleasant in the Central Highlands and mostly nice and pleasant in the South of Vietnam. The skies are often cloudy in these regions in September.
Possible Dangers From Extreme Weather: Landslides, Rock Slides, Flash Floods
Landslides, rock slides may take place anywhere which have continual rain for a few days and which have vertical or steep rock cliffs or high slopes. Flash floods may happen in day time or night time when torrential rain is deposited in an area with gradient terrain or mountainous terrain without enough forest or trees covered in a short period of time. Be extra cautious and be vigilant if you have to travel in these regions.
1/ Northern Vietnam
- Landslides, flash floods may take place in Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Yen Bai, Mu Cang Chai, Lao Cai, Sapa, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La and Hoa Binh.
Attention on :
- Route 32 at Mu Cang Chai,
- The route to the Muong Hoa Valley in Sapa,
- In the area of the Muong Hoa Valley in Sapa or further to the south of the Muong Hoa Valley,
- Route 6 at the Thung Khe Pass between Mai Chau and Tan Lac Districts of Hoa Binh Province where have rock slides may take place.
2/ Central Highlands and Central Coast of Vietnam
- Rock slides and landslides often take place on the routes between Da Lat and the lowland :
+ Route 27C between Da Lat and Nha Trang ;
+ Khanh Le Pass on Route 27C where rock slides may happen ;
+ Bao Loc Pass on Route 20 between Lam Dong Province and Dong Nai Province where landlides may happen.
- Namphao (Laos, Bolikhamxay Province) – Cau Treo (Vietnam, Ha Tinh Province): it may be flooded and travel on this route is not possible.
3/ Southern Vietnam
- The provinces at the base of the Central Highlands: Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai (Cat Tien National Park)… Heavy rain may cause floods in these places.
First 10 Days of September 2023
At the end of August and beginning of September there was a typhoon in the East Vietnam Sea (Saola, Typhoon No.3 in 2023) which mostly brushed the coast of Guangdong Province (China) and did not hit Vietnam’s shore. The impact was only warm weather in Northern Vietnam, bad weather which disrupts boat trips between the inland and the Phu Quoc Island, Nam Du Island.
The Central Coast had heavy rain and still had high temperatures and strong sun. Several streets in Quy Nhon City (Binh Dinh Province) were flooded due to torrential rain.

- East of Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh): rain, clouds, 26-33oC mostly;
- West of Southern Vietnam ( The Mekong Delta): clouds, rain, 24-30oC mostly, 26-32oC in An Giang.
Second 10 Days of September 2023
In the second 10 days of September 2023 Northern Vietnam headed further into autumn with rain alternated by cloudy days which helped to bring the temperatures to lower levels.
The Central Coast of Vietnam has entered the rainy season with daily rain and some long-lasting rain.
The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam has come into high rainy season with very pleasant temperatures.
In the last couple of days of the second decade of September 2023, there was heavy rain in all over the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam. Parts of Route 20 between Da Lat and Dong Nai were flooded temporarily which blocked traffic. Heavy rain accompanied by strong gusts of wind destroyed metal roofing and felled trees in Ho Chi Minh City.

In the last decade of September 2023, there was more rain in the far northern mountains, in the Central Highlands and in Southern Vietnam.
The lowland of Northern Vietnam had beautiful days with sun or with some clouds and with pleasant temperatures and breezes.
The Central Coast of Vietnam continued to have days with clouds alternated by days with rain.
The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam continued to have rain and heavy rain. Long-lasting rain caused temporary flood in several places.

The Phu Quoc Island had rain mostly, 25-29oC.
There was a tropical depression hitting the Central Coast of Vietnam from Quang Tri to Da Nang causing heavy rain in the North and Central Coast of Vietnam, floods in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Binh.
Ho Chi Minh Road which passes the western side of Nghe An Province is under flood water.
Hanoi had streets flooded on 28-September.
Tram Tau District of Yen Bai had several communes flooded blocking traffic.
There was a landslide at the Cun Gradient in Hoa Binh Province.
Cao Phong District of Hoa Binh Province had places flooded.
