These are notes on Vietnam weather in March 2023 and what to know before planning travel vacations to Vietnam in 2023, be it your family holidays or your travelers’ Vietnam tours if you are a travel company or tour agency.
March is spring in northern Vietnam, the dry season in the Central Coast of Vietnam, in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam.
The air is sometimes moist or even wet in northern Vietnam due to meetings of different winds and sometimes due to that the weak Northeasterly Wind blows more from the sea bringing along more humidity than usual. The Northeasterly Monsoon usually blows inland more than from the sea which makes the winter cold and dry in northern Vietnam. There are occasionally light drizzles in northern Vietnam and it is sometimes foggy in this region in March, too. But with climate change in recent years, the normal patterns do not take place every year and it is no surprise if you find sunny weather every day with beautiful breezes; the temperatures are then extremely pleasant.
The Northeasterly Wind often prevails and the sea is often rough all over the East Vietnam Sea from the North to the South. But the North of Vietnam sometimes has the Southeasterly Wind dominant in March, or meeting and conflict of different winds.
The temperatures are often pleasant all over Vietnam in March. In high mountains in the far North it may still be chilly. But the South of Vietnam starts having hot days with temperatures over 35oC. The Central Region and the Central Highlands have lovely sunny weather with pleasant temperatures.
It may happen in March that the high-temperature region to the West and Northwest of Vietnam may build up and there is a heat strike in the Northwest of Vietnam (Hoa Binh, Son La), in the North of the Central Coast (Nghe An, Ha Tinh), in the Central Coast (Quang Binh, Quang Tri), and in the South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh).

Last 10 Days of March 2023
The last 10 days of March 2023 was remarkable with a heat strike across several regions in Vietnam from the North to the South. It is normal that heavily populated cities in the South like Tay Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, Bien Hoa and Binh Duong… are entering the hottest time of the year. And it may happens that Quang Binh and Quang Tri (Central Coast) can have some days with high temperatures in March. But a heat strike in several regions of Vietnam at the same time is something extreme! This time the heat strike was caused by high-temperature regions formed to the Northwest and West of Vietnam (in Cambodia, Laos and China).
The weather in different regions in Vietnam during the heat strike from 21-March through 23-March:
- Northeast of Vietnam: sun , 19-34oC in the Northeast;

- Southern Vietnam: sun, 23-34oC mostly, 24-36oC in Ho Chi Minh City, Bien Hoa, Tay Ninh.
The heat strike was quite brief and it happened mostly at mid day in most places. Densely populated cities in Southern Vietnam and some places in the Central Coast (Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri) suffered from high temperatures all day. And generally speaking this period was still great for sightseeing tours, family holidays, trekking adventure holidays in Northern Vietnam and for beach vacations and island holidays in the Central Coast and Southern Vietnam. It was also good for sight-seeing tours in the Central Coast of the country mostly.
Then there was a new spell of the cool Northeasterly Wind hitting Vietnam on 24-March sending the weather in the North back to winter patterns. There were brief isolated rain in several areas in the North and in the Central Coast of Vietnam. The cool wind put an end to the heat strike in all over the country.
