These are notes on Vietnam weather in January 2023 and what to know before planning travel holidays to Vietnam in 2023.
January is winter in the North of Vietnam, about to be the end of the rainy season in the Central Coast, the dry season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam. The rain in the Central Coast starts to get lighter coming towards to end of January though. During this month the North Easterly Monsoon (or Winter Monsoon) prevails in all of Vietnam which often causes rough sea all over the country.
Those planning holidays on islands in Vietnam be it anywhere in the North, in the Central Region or in the South of Vietnam should be prepared with strong sea waves.
Also, it is good to note that the temperatures are often very pleasant all over the country during this time of the year. In the first half of January it may still be cold in the far northern mountains.
First 10 Days of January 2023
The North of Vietnam had great weather in the first 10 days of January, 2023 with mostly sunny days and pleasant temperatures.
The Central Coast had rain all over the region.
The Central Highlands had mostly sunny days and some irregular rain in the dry season with pleasant temperatures.
The South of Vietnam had unusual rain during the dry season with chilly temperatures.
Rainfalls within 24 hours in the Central Coast at the beginning of the year:
- Quang Tri, Hai Lang District: 154.6mm at Hai An Commune;
- Thua Thien Hue, Phong Dien District: 146mm at Rao Trang Hydro Power Station;
- Da Nang Ba Na Hills: 67.6mm;
- Quang Ngai: 107mm
The temperatures were
- Northern Vietnam: 17-24oC in the Northeast, 16-26oC in the Northwest, 18-23oC in the lowland;
- North of the Central Coast: 18-23oC;
- Central Coast from Quang Binh to Hue: 19-23oC;
- Central Coast from Da Nang to Quy Nhon: 21-26oC;
- Central Coast from Nha Trang – Phan Thiet: 22-28oC;
- Central Highlands: 17-29oC;
- Southern Vietnam: 22-28oC mostly, 22-31oC in Ho Chi Minh City.
Second 10 Days of January 2023
The second 10 days of January 2023 started with some drizzle in Northern Vietnam, some light rain in the Central Coast alternated by dry days with overcast skies, sunny time in the South of the Central Coast from Nha Trang to Phan Thiet, lovely sunny days in the Central Highlands, irregular rain in Southern Vietnam.
On 15-January-2023 a strong spell of cold wind arriving in northern Vietnam bringing the temperatures to lower levels; sunny skies turned cloudy and overcast; the winds were strong in the North. The new spell of cold wind caused rain in the Central Coast from Ha Tinh to Nha Trang. The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam had lovely sunny days with pleasant temperatures. The sea was rough from the North to the South.
The temperatures were
- Northern Vietnam: 7-13oCoC in the Northeast, 10-19oC in the Northwest, 12-15oC in the lowland;
- North of the Central Coast: 12-16oC;
- Central Coast from Quang Binh to Hue: 15-20oC;
- Central Coast from Da Nang to Quy Nhon: 19-24oC;
- Central Coast from Nha Trang – Phan Thiet: 22-27/21-31oC;
- Central Highlands: 16-27oC;
- Southern Vietnam: 22-31oC mostly, 22-33oC in Ho Chi Minh City.
Last 10 Days of January 2023
There was a strong spell of the Winter Monsoon hitting Vietnam on 24-January. The impacts of this spell of cold wind were rain in the Central Coast and irregular rain in some places in Southern Vietnam.
In the last 10 days of January 2023 it was mostly pleasant weather in the North, in the Central Coast and in the South of Vietnam. The sea remained rough throughout the country as the result of the strong winter monsoon.
The weather and temperatures in the regions of Vietnam were
- Northern Vietnam: sunny mostly, 7-18oCoC in the Northeast, sunny and 8-19oC in the Northwest, 12-19oC in the lowland;
- North of the Central Coast: sun, mostly clouds, some rain, 12-18oC;
- Central Coast from Quang Binh to Hue: rain, some clouds, 16-19oC;
- Central Coast from Da Nang to Quy Nhon: some rain, clouds, 18-23oC;
- Central Coast from Nha Trang – Phan Thiet: some rain, mostly clouds and sun, 21-26/23-30oC;
- Central Highlands: sun mostly, 13-24oC;
- Southern Vietnam: clouds mostly, some unusual rain, 22-28oC mostly, 22-30oC in Ho Chi Minh City.
Another strong spell of the cold Northeasterly Monsoon hit Vietnam on 26-January-2023.
- Northern Vietnam: clouds mostly, 6-16oCoC in the Northeast, clouds and 8-16oC in the Northwest, clouds 11-18oC in the lowland;
- North of the Central Coast: mostly clouds, some rain, 12-16oC;
- Central Coast from Quang Binh to Hue: rain, 13-21oC;
- Central Coast from Da Nang to Quang Ngai: rain, 18-24oC;
- Central Coast from Quy Nhon to Nha Trang: rain, 21-27oC;
– Central Coast from Phan Rang Thap Cham to Phan Thiet: clouds and sun, 22-31oC;
- Central Highlands: sun mostly, 16-27oC;
- Southern Vietnam: clouds mostly, some unusual rain, 22-30oC mostly, 23-34oC in Ho Chi Minh City.
