These are notes on Vietnam weather in April 2023 and what to know before planning travel holidays to Vietnam in 2023, be it your family vacations or your travelers’ Vietnam tours if you are a tour company or travel agency.
General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in April
April is spring in northern Vietnam, the dry season in the Central Coast of Vietnam, in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam.
The air is sometimes moist or even wet in northern Vietnam in the first half of April which is due to meetings of different winds and sometimes due to that the weak Northeasterly Wind blows more from the sea bringing along more moisture than usual. The Northeasterly Monsoon usually blows within inland (through continent) more than from the sea.
There are occasionally light drizzles in northern Vietnam and it is sometimes foggy in this region in the first half of April, too. But with climate change in recent years, the normal patterns do not take place every year and it is no surprise if you find sunny weather every day with beautiful breezes; the temperatures are then extremely pleasant. In the latter scenario, this period is among the best times to visit the North of Vietnam.
The Northeasterly Wind is often too weak and the sea is mostly calm all over the East Vietnam Sea from the North to the South. But the North of Vietnam sometimes has the Southeasterly Wind dominant in April. This wind in the latter half of April helps to bring about dry weather and pleasant temperatures in Northern Vietnam.
The Sun is in the Northern Hemisphere in April and the atmosphere over India, Thailand, Myanmar and part of China gets heated more. The Southwesterly Wind forms and blows from the Bengal Bay through India, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and through Vietnam. This wind causes showers and pleasant temperatures in Southern Vietnam and in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. This same wind causes dry weather with hot temperatures in several regions of Vietnam due to the foehn effect.
It may happen and it is more likely in the latter half of April that the high-temperature air troughs form in the atmosphere over India, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and southwest of China (Yunnan) which cause dry weather with high temperatures or occasionally heat strikes in the regions to the West and Northwest of Vietnam(Lao Cai, Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau), in the North of the Central Coast (Nghe An, Ha Tinh), in the Central Coast (Quang Binh, Quang Tri), part of the Central Highlands of Vietnam (Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak) and in the South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh).
The heat strikes may worsen accompanied by the foehn wind in the affected regions: part of the Northwest of Vietnam, the North of the Central Coast of Vietnam, part of the Mid Central Coast of Vietnam (Quang Binh, Quang Tri) and part of the Central Highlands of Vietnam (Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak).
