First 10 Days of December 2022
The first day of December 20222 marked the beginning of the winter in northern Vietnam in 2022. The newly arrived spell of the Northeasterly Wind was very strong. The North had some light rain, but the Central Coast had heavy rain.
It is normal that winter starts around 20-November. It was unusual in 2022 as the Winter Monsoon first came on 10-October which is over one month earlier than usual. And it was pleasant temperatures alternated by warm temperatures until the last day of November 2022. Autumn had been long and beautiful in Vietnam in 2022.
At the beginning of the month, heavy rain was found in the Central Coast (24 hours’ time):
- Thua Thien Hue: Bach Ma (328mm);
- Thua Thien Hue: Nam Dong (257mm);
- Quang Nam: Ron Reservoir(559mm), Phuoc Hiep (720mm);
- Quang Ngai: Liet Son (580mm);
- Phu Yen: Song Hinh (265mm);
- Khanh Hoa: Khanh Hiep (220mm);
- Kon Tum: Po E (184mm);
- Dak Lak: Ea Pil (202mm)
The temperatures were cold in the North from 10-18oC, 3-6oC lower in the mountains; 22-25oC in the Central Coast, 2-4oC higher from Binh Dinh to Nha Trang; 24-30oc in southern Vietnam, 2-3oC higher in Ho Chi Minh City.
There was a strengthened spell of the Northeasterly Wind on 4-December.
Heavy and long-lasting rain caused landslides in Ha Tinh Province (Route 8A in Huong Son District) and Phu Yen Province (Route 19, Song Hinh District).
At the end of the first 10 days of December 2022, there was a strengthened spell of Winter Monsoon driving the North into the cold with light rain for a night. The Central Coast had heavy rain. The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam had cloudy days and sunny days.
Second 10 Days of December 2022
The North had dry and cold days; the North of the Central Coast had some rain in Ha Tinh; the Mid Central Coast had heavy rain; the South of the Central Coast had light rain and some overcast days. The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam had both cloudy days and sunny days.
The temperatures were
+ The North: 16-19oC, 2-3oC lower in the mountains;
+ The North of the Central Coast: 17-21oC;
+ The Central Coast: 18-22oC to the North of the Hai Van Pass and 19-24oC to the south of the Hai Van Pass, 22-29oC in the South of the Central Coast (from Binh Dinh to Binh Thuan)
+ The Central Highlands: 16-28oC;
+ The South: 21-31oC mostly, 23-32oC in Ho Chi Minh City.
A spell of strengthening cold wind started impacting Northern Vietnam on 16 and 17-December making temperatures in the region much lower: 5-19oC in the mountain and 10-22oC in the lowlands. It was dry and strong wind in the whole of Northern Vietnam.
The North of the Central Coast had some rain, but it was mostly dry. The temperatures were 12-22oC.
The Central Coast had rain mostly. The temperatures were 16-22oC to the north of the Hai Van Pass, 18-23oC to the south of the Hai Van Pass; 4-6oC higher going south from Quy Nhon to Phan Thiet City.
The Central Highlands had cloudy days. The temperatures were 16-27oC.
The South of Vietnam had some rain but it was mostly dry with some sunshine. The temperatures were 21-31oC, 1-2oC higher in Ho Chi Minh City.
Last 10 Days of December 2022
The last 10 days of December started with a strengthening spell of cold wind hitting Northern Vietnam maintaining the cold and dry weather. There was rain from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai, but the light was lighter compared to earlier in the month. It started turning into the dry season in the south of the Central Coast from Nha Trang – Phan Thiet. The Central Highlands had lovely dry days with sunshine. Southern Vietnam enjoyed chilly days. The sea remained rough all over the country.
The temperatures were
- Northern Vietnam: 8-22oC in the far northern mountain, 13-23oC in the lowlands;
- North of the Central Region: 13-23oC;
- Central Coast to the north of Hai Van Pass: 15-22oC;
- Central Coast to the south of Hai Van: 19-24oC, 21-26oC from Quy Nhon, 22-30oC from Nha Trang – Phan Thiet;
- Central Highlands: 14-28oC;
- South of Vietnam: 22-32oC mostly, 23-33oC in Saigon Ho Chi Minh City;
Ho Chi Minh City and South of Vietnam enjoyed 19oC temperature at Christmas.
At the end of the month, there was a very strong spell of cold wind bringing the temperatures in the North and North of the Central Region of Vietnam to a lower level. There was some light rain in the North. There was snow and frost in several mountain peaks in the North.
The weather and temperatures were
- Northern Vietnam: some light rain, frost or snow in the mountains, 8-12oC in the far northern mountain, 12-14oC in the lowlands;
- North of the Central Region: some light rain, overcast mostly, 13-23oC;
- Central Coast to the north of Hai Van Pass: rain, 14-20oC;
- Central Coast to the south of Hai Van: some light rain, 21-25oC, 21-26oC from Quy Nhon, 21-28oC from Nha Trang – Phan Thiet;
- Central Highlands: sun, clouds, 14-27oC;
- South of Vietnam: 21-31oC mostly, 22-32oC in Saigon Ho Chi Minh City;
