The Sung Sot Cave is located on the Bo Hon Island, 1 hour 20 minutes boat trip from the Tuan Chau Island. The cave entrance is about 35m high and the exit is about over 40m. The whole island is covered in dense trees and vines and the cave offers great views of Halong Bay.
Travel Guide to the Sung Sot Cave, Halong Bay
What to expect
The Sung Sot Cave is the biggest cave in Halong Bay with the length of the walking path inside the cave is 500m and it takes over 1 hour to visit the cave. The cave ceiling is from 3m to over 30m high.
The cave does not have many stalactites and stalagmites as many other caves in Halong Bay. On the ceiling there are smooth punching marks which look like they were created by sea waves. There are some tall pillars on the exit which look amazing from the inside.
Visiting the Sung Sot Cave requires some physical climbing steps to the the height of 30m. The entrance is quite small and covered mostly in dense plants and vines. Then the path goes down to a small section inside the cave with some lovely rock formations. The other end of this small section leads to a tiny opening but once we pass this gate, it is a huge cavern in the front.
The long walking path inside the cave is paved and basically flat. The path takes you on a tour around the huge section of the cave to the exit of which the path goes up abruptly. The highest point of the exit is as high as the ceiling of the cave and from here you can have stunning views of Halong Bay with several sail boats at the cave entrance and small islands and mountain peaks in the background.
How to get there
The Sung Sot Cave quires a long cruise of 6 hours or more. You can combine visiting the cave with climbing the Ti Tov Mountains nearby. It is also possible to go kayaking, visiting Oyster Farm or Fishing Villages near the cave.
If you are on an overnight boat cruise, some boat companies anchor for the night near the Sung Sot Cave and vising the cave is on the cruise itinerary.
