Forest at the nature reserve is mostly evergreen forest on limestone mountains. The nature reserve is adjacent to other nature reserves (Pu Hoat, Nam San) in Nghe An Province (Pu Hoat) and in Laos (Nam San), so it is an important habitat for several species migrating from one place to another.
Mountains
The nature reserve is on a mountain range running west-east from Sam Nua (Laos) to Thuong Xuan and Nghi Xuan Districts of Thanh Hoa Province. The peaks of this mountain range are from 800m to 1,600m above sea level.
