In the 17th century the pagoda was relocated to an island (Co Ngu Island – the Island of an Old Fish) in the West Lake for the reason that the change of the river course could destroy the pagoda. Villagers built a road linking the island to a bank of the West Lake making it a peninsula.
The name of the pagoda changed a few times from Khai Quoc to An Quoc (Securing Peace to the Kingdom), and Tran Quoc. The pagoda was visited often by the royal families as well as villagers. Nowadays, Tran Quoc is among the must-see attractions to every visitor to Hanoi.
