Hue was the capital city of Vietnam under the Nguyen Dynasty during the period from 1802 to 1945. Hue Citadel was where the Royal Court of the Nguyen Dynasty was seated and where the Royal Family lived.
Travel Guide to The Citadel of Hue
The site of Hue Citadel was researched by King Gia Long in 1803. The construction work started in 1805 and the complex was completed in 1832 under King Minh Mang’s reign.
The site then was called Phu Xuan which had earlier been chosen to be the metropolis of Dang Trong some time during the periods: 1687-1712 and 1739-1774. When the Tay Son took power in 1789, Phu Xuan became the capital city of Vietnam. And when the Nguyen got power from the Tay Son, Phu Xuan again was chosen to be the site of the capital of the kingdom.
The Citadel of Hue had three major components:
- The Outer Citadel which was called Kinh Thanh;
- The Middle Citadel which was called Hoang Thanh or Dai Noi (Royal Citadel or Imperial Citadel);
- The Inner Citadel which was called Tu Cam Thanh or Forbidden Purple City.

The palace name means the Palace of Supreme Harmony. It is here that the throne was placed. This was an important building of the Imperial Citadel where the King hosted Big Official Meetings twice per month. Besides, it was where the King received representatives, officials from foreign countries, ambassadors, diplomatic guests… The King had his birthday ceremonies here, too.
