The Temple of Literature (Van Mieu) was built in 1070 C.E and dedicated to Confucius and Confucianism. Back then education was extremely important in Vietnam, the King recruited Mandarins for the Royal Court via national exams. Confucianism was the main material for the education as well as for the Royal Exams in Vietnam.

In 1076 the National School of Quoc Tu Giam was built to the back of the Temple of Literature making it the first university in Vietnam. The school at first was for education of boys from dignitary families only, but later extended to talented students from different social classes. Needless to say, entrance exams for the National School were extremely difficult.
There are 82 stone steles left showing names of those who had records during various Royal Exams conducted in the Vietnamese history for recruiting Mandarins.
