The Son Tra Peninsula in Da Nang includes a stretch of the Truong Son Mountain Range protruding 15km into the East Vietnam Sea. The width of the peninsula ranges from 2-6km. The highest point of the peninsula is 696m above sea level.

Geography of Son Tra Peninsula
The total area of the peninsula is about 4,400 hectares and forest covers approximately 70% of the peninsula area. The peninsula receives about 2,200mm of rainfall annually. There are several streams on the peninsula feeding water to the diverse ecosystem here.
Flora and Fauna on the Son Tra Peninsula
The Son Tra Peninsula is home to several floral and animal species and many of which are listed as endangered. There are 400-500 red-shanked douc langurs (conflicting numbers by different research organizations) on the peninsula. This species is on brink of extinction worldwide.
Current Threats to the Natural Habitats of Son Tra
Though the peninsula has a diverse ecosytem but it is an isolated natural area which is surrounded a heavily populated city. This means the natural habitat on the peninsula is vulnerable to several threats and any negative impacts on the natural environment of Son Tra are more likely to be permanent.
Da Nang is under rapid development and tourism is putting the city natural environment under a lot of threats. The authority of Da Nang seems in lack of a clear strategy for protecting the natural environment on the peninsula. Son Tra itself is a tourist attraction and man-made tourist infrastructures keeps being added to the peninsula. People are free to venture in any area of the peninsula at the moment.
How to get to the Son Tra Peninsula
The Peninsula is 10km northeast of Da Nang City center. There are two routes to explore the peninsula and both offer great experiences: wild life, pagodas, breathtaking views of the East Vietnam Sea and Da Nang City. There are deserted beaches on the peninsula for those who love to get away from the crowds.

Make sure you have a local guide before venturing into the jungle, there are often people who get lost in the wild and some would not return alive! Allow half a day at least for your visit to Son Tra.
