Sa Dec City is in Dong Thap Province, in the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam. The city is located on the western bank of the Tien River (Upper Mekong River Branch). There are well-preserved 17 ancient houses in this idyllic and laid-back riverside city.
Since the beginning Sa Dec was one of the busiest trading hubs in the Mekong Delta. The population of the city includes Viet, Khmer, French and Chinese.
Under the French rule, Sa Dec once was the provincial capital of different provinces in the Mekong Delta. There are still quite some European architectures in the city.
Sa Dec is well known to several French travelers thanks to the famed love story by a French writer Marguerite Duras who spent her child hood in Sa Dec and who fell in love with a Chinese businessman at the age of 16 years old which was the inspiration for the famed L’amant novel and the movie of the same name.
How to get there
Sa Dec City is 140km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City (aka. Saigon), 30km northwest of Vinh Long City, 50km north of Can Tho City. There are several daily buses between Sa Dec and Ho Chi Minh City. The bus station in Ho Chi Minh City is Western Bus Station (Ben Xe Mien Tay) and that in Sa Dec is Sa Dec Bus Station right in the city.
