My Tho is the provincial capital of Tien Giang Province, on the northern bank of the Tien River (Mekong River tributary). My Tho can be easily visited on a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City and has been a popular attraction.
My Tho is fairly a small and quiet city. Visiting My Tho you can get a feel of the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam: The landscape and the people.
What to see, Tourist Attractions
1/ Vinh Trang Pagoda
This is the biggest Buddhist pagoda in My Tho. The pagoda was built in the 19th century and with architecture of southern Vietnam.
2/ Snake Farm of Dong Tam
The snake farm is among the popular spots visited by tourists in My Tho. Some may find the contained life of the snakes disturbing though.
3/ Thoi Son Island
This is a big island of 1,200 hectares on the Mekong River. Visiting this island you can sample local daily life, try honey tea, taste seasonal fruits and learn about the process of making coconut candies.
4/ Buu Lam Buddhist Pagoda
This is among the oldest pagodas in My Tho City with Theravada Buddism.
5/ Dieu Hoa Communal House
The communal house was built in the early 20th century and with unique architecture that is different from those in southern Vietnam and in other regions of the country. There is a display of old weapons and ancient artefacts inside the communal house.
6/ Tien Giang Museum
There is a good display of the history of the province through different historical preriods.
7/ Former Residence of Bach Cong Tu Playboy
Once a wealthy family and a playboy in southern Vietnam, the house was built in the early 20th century with European architecture.
How to get there
My Tho is 70km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. There are Route 1A and the new expressway Trung – Luong My Thuan between Ho Chi Minh City and My Tho. The roads are in good conditions. There are several local buses commuting the two cities from the two bus stations: Ben Xe Mien Tay (Western Bus Station) in Ho Chi Minh City and Tien Giang Bus Station in My Tho.
How to get around
There are several means of transport to explore My Tho: taxi, scooter taxi, pull rickshaw, on foot… If you travel by taxi without meter or by scooter tax then make sure you and the driver have got a clear agreement on the price before starting a trip.
