Muong Phang is a valley in Dien Bien Province. The valley is 8km northeast of Dien Bien Phu as the crow flies but the road distance is 18km. Muong Phang was the headquarters of the Viet Minh during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign which led to the fall of the French in Indochina and their departure from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
Travel Guide to Muong Phang, Dien Bien
Before Muong Phang, the headquarters of the Viet Minh was in the Tham Pua Cave which is is in Ban Po, Chieng Sinh Commune, Tuan Giao District. Tham Pua is 60km northeast of Dien Bien Phu and it was not convenient for the commanders to observe the battles and to provide in-time orders, hence Muong Phang was chosen.
Muong Phang was quite well concealed and hidden by the surrounding ranges of mountains and by dense forests. At Muong Phang there are the Pu Huot and Pu To Co Mountains which are 1,700m above sea level. From these mountain peaks General Giap could observe the battle daily with help of military binoculars. The trails to these mountain peaks were all under the canopy of thick forest.
What to see, Tourist Attractions, Things to do
1/ Viet Minh Headquarters in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign
The headquarters was in a dense forest with huge timber trees close to the base of the Pu Huot Mountain where General Giap observed the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. Visiting Muong Phang now you can visit this site with well preserved huts and tunnels.
2/ Pa Khoang Lake
The huge lake in the valley of Muong Phang provides important water source for local agriculture and daily life. There are woods with big timber trees around the lake making it a great place to get relaxed and fresh air.
