Travel Guide to Hue Weather, Best Time for Holidays in Hue Vietnam
Hue Climate Is Driven by Monsoon and Influenced by Topographical Relief
The dry season in Hue is attributed to the weakened cool Northeasterly Monsoon and strengthening Southwesterly Wind (foehn wind).
The temperatures are pleasant in February and March while it is hot from late March through August. The high temperatures are attributed to either the strong Southwesterly Monsoon (or the foehn wind) and/or formations of low-pressure (high temperature) air troughs over the southwest of China (Yunnan), Myanmar, Thailand and Laos.
The air troughs form as above-mentioned thanks to heated air in the Northern Hemisphere. The formations of the air troughs often take place at the same time of the Northeasterly Monsoon (Winter Monsoon) substantially weakened, or strengthening of the Southwesterly Wind (from The Bengal Bay, Indian Ocean). Either of these two cases result in dry weather with high temperatures in Hue (and affected regions in Vietnam)
The wind gets dry crossing inland Thailand and Laos and traversing through high mountain peaks to the west of Vietnam, and warmed up by the high temperatures inland.
There may be short-lived torrential rains in the summer which are caused by Southeasterly Monsoon which is humid and pleasant.
During the hot season, the temperatures in Hue are often very high surpassing 37-40oC. The cool temperatures are found in late November through January which can be from 14-28oC.
The Imperial Citadel of Hue, Vietnam
The rainy reason in Hue is caused by strong Northeasterly Monsoon which blows inland from the sea and which is blocked by the Truong Son Mountain Range to the west of Hue. The clouds accumulate and long-lasting rains are found during the time of the strengthening Northeasterly Monsoon. The temperatures are cool during this time. Most rainfall in Hue is found in late September to December.
The topographical relief of Hue helps to form the weather pattern in the province which is drastically different from most regions in Vietnam. To the west of the province there is the Truong Son Mountain Range which runs almost the full length of Vietnam.
To the South of Hue, the mountain forks into two mountains running to the coast at Chan May (east and west) and Bach Ma (Hai Van Pass). When the Northeasterly Monsoon is prevalent, the humid cold wind is blocked by these mountains which causes long-lasting rain in Hue. It is these mountains which help to form distinct climates between the region to the north and that to the south of the Hai Van Pass.
Hue has average annual rainfall of over 2,700mm which is among the few highest in Vietnam. At Bach Ma National Park, the average annual rainfall is above 4,000mm.
From October through November, sometimes December, Hue may be affected by tropical depressions or typhoons. It may rain continuously for several days when affected by a typhoon or tropical depression which may cause floods and landslides both in the coastal areas and in the mountains. Hue may suffer the worst damage by a typhoon.

The best time to visit Hue
The best time to visit Hue is from late January through April during which it is fairly dry weather with sun and with pleasant or more tolerable temperatures. During this time visits to key attractions in Hue City are extremely pleasant. Some travelers may like to go on bike tours on the scenic coastal road all the way from Hue to Da Nang during this time.
When the temperatures are warm and the weather is dry from March through August, it may be great time for beach holidays and golf vacations on the Lang Co Beach.
Late August and September could be nice depending on each year as climate change has made seasonal patterns drastically different nowadays compared to the norm in Hue.
The Bach Ma National Park can not be visited whenever it rains which may be from June through January/February. The reason is that it is almost encircled by high mountains and when it rains it is often wet and cloudy for several days. The road is too small and has dangers of landslides,...
It is not possible to take on battlefield tours to the Ashau Valley (A Luoi) and the Hamburger Hill during the rainy season.
