Da Lat has a subtropical highland climate with temperature weather all year round; the temperatures are rarely higher than 30oC and rarely lower than 5oC. There are two seasons per year: dry season from December through April, rainy season from May through November.
The rainy season in Da Lat is caused by the Southwesterly Monsoons and the topographical relief.
- From May through July, the Southwesterly Monsoon originates from the Bengal Bay blowing northeastwards depositing daily rains in South Vietnam and the Central Highlands including Da Lat.
- From June through October, high pressure air masses from southern hemisphere (in the Southern Tropic) crossing the Equator becoming warm and moist blowing northeastwards depositing rains in the Central Highlands and South Vietnam.
- The topographical relief in the area of Da Lat is higher to the north and lower to the south. When the moist South Westerly Monsoon blows then moist clouds accumulate in Da Lat area and torrential rains are found.
The Southwesterly Monsoon gets stronger in late July through October which causes heavier rains in the Central Highlands including Da Lat.
Da Lat Vietnam
From August through October and sometimes November or early December, Da Lat may be affected by tropical depressions or typhoons. It may rain for several days when affected by a typhoon or tropical depression which may cause floods and landslides. The reason is because a tropical depression or a monsoon is an extremely low pressure air area. They often form in the area around the Luzon Island in the Philippines and often travel northwestwards or west-northwest to hit the coast in northern Vietnam. This extremely low pressure air makes the often strong Southwesterly Monsoon more violent, hence more rains in the South of Vietnam and the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
From December through April, the predominant wind in Vietnam is the Northeasterly Monsoon which causes the cold winter in the North of Vietnam. The wind is mostly blocked by the Hai Van Mountain Pass and does not make the temperatures in the region south of the Hai Van Pass as cold as those to the north. Besides the high topographical relief of the Central Highlands block most influence by the wind. Still, it is dry in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam during these months.
