The Van Long Nature Reserve is a system of limestone mountains, rivers, flooded lands and a diverse ecosystem and has been listed to the UNESCO World Ramsar Sites.
Best time to visit
Van Long Nature Reserve is best visited in spring (January through April) or autumn (late August to early November). There may be typhoons in autumn which may disrupt boat trips on the river at Van Long, but typhoons can often be forecast 7-10 days in advance.
What to see, things to do
1/ Boat trip
A boat trip on the Van Long Nature Reserve takes 1-2 hours passing through limestone mountain caves. The flooded fields offer sight of wild birds and there are chances to sight wild francois langurs on the limestone mountains at Van Long.
2/ Country road bicycle tours
There are several scenic and quiet village roads around the Van Long Nature Reserve that are ideal for leisure biking tours and having close communion with the villagers.
3/ Bird Tours
Van Long Nature Reserve is home to several bird species including resident birds, migratory birds, water fowls (Chinese pond heron, bulbuls, little grebes, bittern, Northern Shoveler, Northern pintail…) A bird-watching tour is done by rowing boat which takes 1-2 hours.
4/ Primate Tours
Van Long Nature Reserve is home to the largest population of the critically endangered Delacour’s langurs (White-Shanked Langurs) which is endemic to northern Vietnam. A wild primate tour at Van Long can be done in 1-2 hours.
Where to stay
There are luxury resorts and cozy homestays near the Van Long Nature Reserve. The area is especially peaceful and is a great place to be away from the crowds and noise.
How to get there and away
Van Long Nature Reserve is 120km south of Hanoi via Route 1A or via the expressway between Hanoi and Ninh Binh. If you travel via the expressway, then you must turn into the provincial route 194 right after Phu Ly then turn into Route 1A. After crossing the Khuat Brige (Cau Khuat) spanning the Day River, turn right onto a small raised road for 7km to the Van Long Nature Reserve.
