Thung Nang is at Dam Khe Village, Ninh Hai Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh Province. Thung Nang is a system of flooded fields, lakes surrounded by limestone mountains.

There are two main enclosed areas at Thung Nang: the Inner Thung Nang (Thung Nang Trong) is 5 hectares and the Outer Thung Nang (Thung Nang Ngoai) is 3 hectares. The two areas of Thung Nang are connected via an underwater cave.
Weather and Climate, Best time to visit
In spring time from late January through March, the landscape at Thung Nang is often shrouded in mist which makes the beauty mysterious and charming!
April is in between spring and summer, and the temperatures are very pleasant.
From May through August, it is summer in Ninh Binh and Thung Nang. The temperatures are hot and the air is humid. It is strong sunshine mostly.
It is autumn from mid August through October and the temperatures are very pleasant at Thung Nang. It is rice season from late August through October and the landscape in Outer Thung Nang is just scenic!
There may be some typhoons hitting northern Vietnam between June – October which may cause rain for a couple of days each, and visiting Thung Nang is still possible but not recommended.
From mid November through January it is winter time and having a boat trip at Thung Nang may be cold due to strong winds. The landscape is less attractive because there is a lack of green colors from rice fields and from the reeds at Thung Nang.
What to see, Tourist Attractions
1/ Rivers, Mountains, Underwater Caves
Visiting Thung Nang most visitors take a rowing boat trip for 2 hours traveling on the river, on the lake… There are mountains including Nui Coc, Nui Ba Doi, Nui Mang, Nui Vang,.. to visit on the boat trip.
2/ Thach Bich Pagoda, Thung Nang Temple, Voi Dai Temple
Thach Bich Pagoda dates from the 13th century and dedicated to Buddhism of Northern School (Mahayana).
Thung Nang Temple is dedicated to Goddess of the Mountain (Chua Thuong Ngan), a Vietnamese indigenous cult.
Voi Temple is dedicated to Ho Quoc Dai Vuong, a saint who protects the villagers.
Things to do
1/ Rowing boat trip
The boat trip at Thung Nang is similar to those at Trang An and Tam Coc with rivers, lakes, temples and mountains. It is but more peaceful at Thung Nang as fewer travelers visit this site.
3/ Walking
It is not possible to explore all of Thung Nang without a boat but we can walk amid paddy fields surrounded by limestone mountains in Outer Thung Nang. And we can also get off the boat and enjoy easy walk to visit temples in the Inner Thung Nang.
4/ Birding
Thung Nang attract quite a large number of birds and storks. Visiting the site in late afternoon or early morning we can have a glimpse of the busy wildlife here. The place is busier during autumn, winter and spring times. There are tour operators in Vietnam offering specialist birding tours in Vietnam which includes birding sites in Ninh Binh.
How to get there and away
Thung Nang is 800m east of Bich Dong Pagoda and 2km northwest of Tam Coc, 8km southwest of Ninh Binh City. The single country road connecting these sites are very idyllic and great for either walking or biking.
