Hue City belongs to Thua Thien Hue Province in the Central Region of Vietnam. Hue was the capital city of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945, the city is 690km south of Hanoi. Hue is home to the most ancient imperial citadel in South East Asia. The Ancient Imperial Citadel of Hue and the Royal Tombs are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

1/ Hue Imperial Citadel
It was here that housed the last Royal Court and Royal Family of Vietnam. There are buildings for the Royal Family and offices for the King and mandarins to work, a worshiping quarter, concubine area... Most were destroyed during the war, but you can still have good ideas of them visiting the site. The Royal Citadel should take half a day.
2/ Hue Royal Tombs
The Royal Tombs of Hue have a lot about themselves that should not be missed on your trip to Hue. They are masterpieces of arts and architecture. Each tomb contains certain knowledge of philosophy and tells a lot about the king’s life and the Vietnamese history. Visiting the Royal Tombs, you’ll travel your way amid lovely countryside in Vietnam. Visiting all the royal tombs takes a full day.
3/ Cycling in the countryside
Cycling in the leafy countryside of Hue is a great experience. The landscape is so bucolic and peaceful and certainly you’ll have a very good idea of the country life having close communion with locals on your adventure. You can visit the Royal Tombs, the Royal Arena, the Thanh Toan covered bridge, amazing garden houses typical and unique of Hue… all on your bicycle. There is a wonderful coastal back road for you to capture amazing landscape and country life.
4/ Boat Trip on the Perfume River
Taking a boat trip on the Perfume River to the Thien Mu Pagoda or to the Royal Tombs. Visiting the Royal Tombs by river takes a full day, but that would be a long and tedious day! You’d better take a boat trip to the sites and travel back to the city by road.
5/ Hue Music on the Perfume River and in the Royal Theather
- Taking a music cruise on the Perfume River in the evening. It is a great experience to sample Hue traditional music right on a boat cruising the Perfume River.
- Adoring Royal Music of Hue at the Duyet Thi Duong Royal Theatre. More information can be obtained on the site when you visit the Royal Citadel.
6/ Hue Cuisine
- Lost in a culinary adventure in Hue: Hue cuisine is considered among the finest in the Vietnamese cuisine. While in Hue, you can sample the food in fine-dining restaurants, street restaurants or take part in a cooking class. Hue Royal Cuisine is available on the menu of many restaurants in town. Do not miss Banh Canh (big-thread noodle soup), Banh Khoai (Hue pancake), Com Hen (steamed rice with red-hot spicy basket mussels)…
7/ Enjoy a day tour from Hue
- Hue can be the base for exploring Vietnam’s DMZ and learn about the Vietnam War (or American War).
- Else, you can travel uphill westwards to Ashau Valley (A Luoi) and learn about the infamous Battle of Hamburger Hill in the Vietnam War. The trip can take 1-2 day.
- From Hue, you can also day trip to the Bach Ma National Park which is 40km away.
- Taking a photography tour of Hue taking in: the architecture, the country life and the life on the Chuon Lagoon, Cau Hai Lagoon...
