Dak Lak Province is located to the heart of the Central Highlands of Vietnam famed for great coffee, sublime waterfalls, elephant riding and untouched ethnic cultures. The capital of Dak Lak is Buon Ma Thuot City.
Dak Lak is still off the beaten track and only few foregin visitors make trips trip to Dak Lak. It may be that transport to the area is still not convenient and costly.
1/Buon Ma Thuot City
Buon Ma Thuot is the provincial capital of Dak Lak and also known as the the coffee capital of Vietnam. At Buon Ma Thuot you can go on a coffee tour, visit the Ethnology Museum, or Ako Dong Village of the Ede People.
For veterans, you may like to go on a historical tour to learn how strategic Buon Ma Thuot is during the Vietnam War (American War) and how the battles took place here before the fall of Saigon. There is still a tank display right at the road intersection in the city center.
2/Lak Lake
The lake is 56km south of Buon Ma Thuot, on Route 27 from Buon Ma Thuot to Da Lat. The lake is 500 hectare in area, surrounded by Mnong Villages and idyllic countryside. At the Lak Lake, you can have a trip on the serene lake by dug-out boat (piroque) or have an elephant ride through Mnong villages.
There is a resort with clean room and simple facilities by the lakeside. Near the lake, there is also a Bao Dai Summer Palace with lovely views of the lake and the countryside. The complex has been converted to be a boutique luxury hotel nowadays.
3/Amazing waterfalls: Dray Sap, Dray Nur, Gia Long, Trinh Nu
Gia Long (also known as Upper Dray Sap – Dray Sap Thuong): 32km southwest of Buon Ma Thuot, between Dak Lak and Dak Nong Province.
Dray Nur and Dray Sap: 25km south of Buon Ma Thuot
All waterfalls are sublime and amid wild jungles of Dak Lak. There are trekking tours, biking tours and white water rafting tours to visit the waterfalls and adore the sublime nature in the area.
4/Buon Don (Ban Don) Village
The village of Lao, Ede and Mnong, Jarai... is 40km northwest of Buon Ma Thuot City, by the Serepok River. The villagers have been specializing in domesticating wild elephants for generations.
At Ban Don, you can ride elephants (which is not recommended nowadays) or go on a boat adventure to discover the 7-branch waterfall. For more adventurous travelers, you can go further to explore Yok Don National Park.
5/Yok Don National Park
The national park is the biggest deciduous forest in Vietnam which is home to several floral and faunal species: wild boars, Asian tigers, elephants, buffaloes… The national park stretches its area in the Provinces of Dak Lak and Dak Nong and right on the border with Cambodia.
At Yok Don, you can go biking, camping, trekking, bird-watching… to learn about the flora and fauna here.
5/ Yang Prong Cham Tower
The Cham Ruin is believed to have been built in the 13th century and believed to be dedicated to God Shiva. The ruin is amid jungle and by the Ea H’leo River of Ea Sup District, Dak Lak, 90km west of Buon Ma Thuot.
