The Quan Thanh Temple along with the Tran Quoc Pagoda is located on the southeastern corner of the West Lake in Hanoi. These two sites are 700m apart and connected to each other by the Thanh Nien Road. This road is among the most beautiful one in Hanoi with two beautiful lakes on both sides: The West Lake and the Truc Bach Lake.
Travel Guide to the Quan Thanh Temple, Hanoi
The Quan Thanh Temple was built in the 11th century when the Ly Dynasty relocated the capital city from Hoa Lu to Thang Long (Hanoi now). The Quan Thanh Temple was less than 1km north of the Ancient Thang Long Citadel.
The Quan Thanh Temple is dedicated to Taoism and the temple worships Saint Huyen Thien Tran Vu – a Saint in Taoism who administers the Northern Pole. But at the Quan Thanh Temple, Huyen Thien Tran Vu is also a Deity in a Vietnamese legend and he was the one who helped King An Duong Vuong to build the Co Loa Citadel and he was the one who saved local communities around the West Lake from devils. It is found a lot in Vietnamese spiritual life that a God, Goddess or Saint at a given temple.. has several meanings…
If we take a panoramic view of Hanoi from above we would see that the site of the Thang Long Citadel back in the 11th century was protected by 2 temples on the northern side: The Quan Thanh Temple and the Voi Phuc Temple one of which on the southeastern corner and the other on the southwestern corner of the West Lake. It may be possible that these two temples played a very important role in Fengshui in protecting the Royal Citadel from Bad Energy emitted on the corners of the lake. Still it is good to know that there is a generally accepted theory that there were four temples protecting the capital city: Quan Thanh, Voi Phuc, Bach Ma and Kim Lien. But given the years that these temples were built the this theory does not make sense.
