The One Pillar Pagoda, which is also called Lien Hoa Dai meaning Lotus Flower Stalk, is what left of a complex of pagoda named Dien Huu Pagoda (Pagoda of Long-Lasting Good Luck). The construction of the Dien Huu Pagoda was in 1049 under the reign of King Ly Thai Tong and finished in 1105 under the reign of King Ly Nhan Tong.

Legend
It is said that King Ly Thai Tong had a dream that the Goddess of Mercy took his hand and led him to a lotus flower stalk. The King later told his chief monk of the dream and was advised to build a pagoda with architecture similar to his dream. Once the pagoda was completed the King would have monks walking around the structure praying so that long-lasting good luck would be granted onto the King.
Location
The Dien Huu Pagoda was built in the Royal Garden located to the northwest of the Royal Citadel. Every year, on the 8th of the Fourth Lunar Month the King would visit the pagoda for annual bathing of the Buddha Statue.
Destruction and Renewal
The Dien Huu Pagoda was renewed several times during the history and the last major renewal was under the Nguyen Dynasty in 1840-1850 and 1922. In 1954, the whole complex was totally destroyed by the French when they left Hanoi after loosing the war. And the One Pillar Pagoda was rebuilt in 1955.
How to get there
The One Pillar Pagoda is 300m southwest of Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum. Normally, visitors visit the mausoleum first, then proceed to the Presidential Palace and Ho Chi Minh’s House on stilts, then visit the One Pillar Pagoda on the exit.
