The Ngau Pagoda is located in Yen Nguu Village (also known as the Ngau Village), Tam Hiep Commune, Thanh Tri District, Hanoi. The pagoda was built in 1130 by Queen Le Thien Hoang hau (during the reign of King Ly Than Tong).
Travel Guide to the Ngau Pagoda, Hanoi
The pagoda was dedicated to Buddhism and there was a back building dedicated to the Goddess of Mau Ngau. Before the pagoda was built the Ngau Village had two temples: one to the Founder Good of the Village and one to the Goddess of Mau Ngau. The former was later to be worshiped at the village communal house (Dinh Ngau) and the latter was worshiped at the Ngau Pagoda.
The Ngau Pagoda was deserted during the time of the movement to support the King Le and to fight the Lord Trinh in the 18th century (1727-1740). When Lord Trinh Doanh took power he brought back order and had good treatment to the King Le. The Ngau Pagoda was in serious degradation when it was renewed in 1750 with support of Lord Trinh.
During the wars against the French and the US, the Ngau Pagoda was totally destroyed as it was considered a shelter for the Vietnamese military. The pagoda was again rebuilt in 1995. Another expansion was done in 2000. The pagoda now has the main building for worshiping the Buddha and Arhats, a garden, a monk quarter, visitor quarter,...
The major legacy left at the pagoda includes the bronze bell cast in 1799, century-old jack-fruit tree, and the century-old mango tree in the pagoda yard. The pagoda is always busy at the beginning of a lunar month and at full moon.
How to get there
The Ngau Pagoda is 10km south of the Hoan Kiem Lake via Giai Phong Road. The pagoda is near Van Dien Train Station and Linh Dam Lake.
