The Independence Palace is among the most popular and must-see attraction to all visitors to Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon). The palace, which is right in the heart of the city, has a very interesting history.
The French started attacking Vietnam at Da Nang in 1858 and managed to invade the whole of South Vietnam in 1867. In the period 1868-1871 Norodom Palace was built and completed and it was the residence of the Governor of South Vietnam (Cochinchina).
In March-September 1945 Norodom Palace was the Japanese Headquarters after they took a successful coup d’etat overthrowing the French in Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos). But after the conclusion of the World War II, the French came back and Norodom Palace was the headquarters of the French War Machine in Vietnam (and Cambodia, Laos).
After the the defeat at Dien Bien Phu, the French departed from Vietnam and the country was divided into the North and the South each of which with a different political system and the country was to be reunified through a general election within 2 years. The South of Vietnam was turned into South Vietnam Republic and the North was Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
On 07-September-1954 the French handed over Norodom Palace to Ngo Dinh Diem who had been appointed by Bao Dai as the Prime Minister on 07-July-1954. Norodom Palace was changed to the Independence Palace.
On 26-October-1955 Diem held a referendum in South Vietnam which made him the President of South Vietnam and the deposing of the current Chief of State of South Vietnam (Quoc Truong) – Bao Dai. The referendum was widely known for electoral fraud.
After the Referendum, South Vietnam became South Vietnam Republic and the Independence Palace became the residence of the President of South Vietnam Republic.
