The Hon Cau Island is in Phuoc The Commune, Tuy Phong District, Binh Thuan Province. The island has other names: Lau Cau, Cu Lao Cau, Tan Lang Du.

The Hon Cau Island is a pristine destination, and most Vietnamese and foreign travelers to Vietnam do not know much about. Thanks to the amazing natural landscape and diverse ecosystem that the island with the surrounding sea was demarcated as the Sea Nature Reserve of the Hon Cau Island by Binh Thuan Province in 2010.
The total land area of the Hon Cau Island is nearly 70 hectares and the island perimeter is nearly 5km. It is 1.4km along the northeast -southwest axis ( longest length) and 700m along the north-south axis (widest width). There are several huge blocks of rock around the island with different shapes which help to protect the island from strong winds and sea waves. These huge boulders make the landscape just uniquely beautiful! The highest point on the island is over 50m above sea level.
There are several flora and fauna species on and in the sea area around the island. The flora on the island includes 74 species of which 38 species are vascular. The marine life around the island is rich in species. Hon Cau Island is among three islands in Vietnam as breeding grounds for sea turtles. And there is also the Elephant-Ear Oyster species which brings good incomes.
Weather and Climate, Best Time to Visit
The Hon Cau Island has a tropical monsoon climate with two seasons: dry and rainy seasons. The dry season from mid December through April but it is strong winds and rough sea from November through March due to the Northeasterly Monsoon. April is a good time to visit the island.
The rainy season is from May through October and sometimes November. It is not recommended to visit the island during the peak rainy season from September through October, and sometimes November. There could also be typhoons between late September to November which may disrupt boat trips to and from the island. It is fine to visit the island during the rainy season from May through July when there is plenty of sunshine; during this time it only rains for half an hour each day freshening up the air.
Where to stay
There are no tourist facilities on the island. Bring along your own camping gears and obtain a permit from the Border Police in case you want to stay overnight on the island.
How to get there
To travel to the Hon Cau Island we have to get a boat from the Lien Huong Port of Tuy Phong District, Binh Thuan Province. The Lien Huong Port is 75km northeast of Phan Thiet City via the provincial route 716B and Route 1A. These routes go by the sea and the landscape is captivating.
From the Lien Huong Port to the Hon Cau Island, it is about 10-12km (7 nautical miles).
