The Hai Van Quan or Gate of Hai Van on an elevation of 490m above sea level was built in 1826 on the Hai Van Pass (Pass of Sea Clouds) between Da Nang and Thua Thien Hue Province.
Travel Guide to the Hai Van Quan, Da Nang
History
Thanks to its splendid grandeur and great location the gate earned its nickname of the most sublime gate of all - “Thien Ha De Nhat Hung Quan”.
The Hai Van Quan was built for three purposes:
- It controlled the flow of traffic between northern and southern Vietnam.
- It controlled sea navigation on the Da Nang Bay.
- It helped to protect the Imperial Citadel in Hue.
So this was a military defense system which was supported by systems of walls and batteries of artillery. The walls were mostly built of rock on the lower part and fired bricks on the upper part.
During the time of the Franco-Viet Minh and Vietnam – American War, Hai Van Quan remained an important military post. Several concrete bunkers and buildings were added to the complex.
Since the unification of Vietnam, Hai Van Gate was abandoned as it belonged to the territories of both Da Nang and Thua Thien – Hue Province. The two only reached an agreement in 2017 for a restoration solution and works started since. The total area of the relic is 6,500m2.
Visiting the Hai Van Quan you can learn a lot about the history of Vietnam from the late 19th century till today. Besides, there is a sublime natural landscape all around you that is like no others!
How to get there
The Hai Van Quan is 30km north of Da Nang City and 80km south of Hue City. The Hai Van Pass and the Bach Ma Mountain are part of the Truong Son Mountain Range.
