King Gia Long’s brief biography
King Gia Long was the founder king of the Nguyen Dynasty in Vietnam which ruled the country from 1802-1945. The Nguyen was the final feudal dynasty in Vietnam. The king’s childhood name was Nguyen Phuc Anh, often called Nguyen Anh.
Nguyen Anh was born in 1762 and died in 1820. He was the ruling king of Vietnam in the period 1802-1820. Nguyen Anh was the grandson of Nguyen Phuc Khoat who was the final Nguyen Lord of Dang Trong (the territory to the south of the Gianh River in Quang Binh Province nowadays). In this period, the territory to the north of the Gianh River was called Dang Ngoai which was nominally under the control of the Le Dynasty but the real power in Dang Ngoai was in the hands of the Trinh Lords. During this period, the country official name was Dai Viet.
In 1777 Nguyen Lord was overthrown by the Tay Son putting an end to the period of the Nine Nguyen Lords in Vietnam. Nguyen Anh since then was on the flee and some time lived in exile seeking help to get back power. He was awarded with one failure after another for several years.
In 1787 Nguyen Anh got Southern Vietnam under his control.
In 1792, Nguyen Hue died and Nguyen Anh started attacking the Tay Son until he got full control of Dai Viet in 1802. The name of the country of Vietnam was from 1804.
