The Ly Family had great contribution to Vietnam. King Ly Cong Uan laid the foundation for Vietnam as an independent kingdom. It was under the Ly Dynasty that education was much appreciated and praised and the first university of Vietnam (Dai Viet then) was built in the 11th century C.E.
History
The Do Temple, which was built in 1030 and is dedicated to the Ly Family, was built in Dinh Bang Village in Bac Ninh Province where King Ly Thai To (Ly Cong Uan) was born. The site of the temple had been chosen by King Ly Thai To himself but the temple was built by his son after the king’s death in 1028.
There were several renewals and enlargement done to the temple throughout the history of Vietnam and a major one was done in the 17th century. But the temple was destroyed by the French in 1952 and was rebuilt in 1989.
Architecture
The site of the Do Temple was on a riverside of the once Tieu Tuong River which does not exist nowadays. The vestige of the once great river include series of ponds in Dinh Bang and Tuong Giang Communes.
From the entrance to the main temple, there are a few buildings on the left for local cults. And on the right, there is a huge lake which is part of the former Tieu Tuong River.
In front of the main temple there is a pavilion for the Royal Family to rest in the past. It is used as a place for performing Quan Ho Folk Songs nowadays.
Once we past a gate to an enclosed area, we will be in the front yard of the main temple. The front pavilion is called the Chuyen Bong which is for offerings. Right behind it is the place for worshiping the Eight Kings of the Ly Dynasty.
On the two sides of the front yard, there are houses for guests’ meeting and for villagers’ meetings.
How to get there
The Do Temple is 20km northeast of Hanoi via Route 1A. The temple can be reached on a half a day tour from Hanoi. Alternatively it can be combined with several tourist attractions nearby on a full day tour.
