The Co Loa Ancient Citadel stretches over Co Loa, Duc Tu, and Viet Hung Communes of Dong Anh District in Hanoi. The ancient citadel dates from 208 Before Common Era (BCE). This is the oldest ancient citadel in Vietnam.
Travel Guide to the Co Loa Ancient Citadel, Hanoi
The site of the Co Loa Citadel was the capital city of Vietnam under King An Duong Vuong (3rd century BCE and under King Ngo Quyen (10th century C.E); both of these two periods marked importantly turning points in the Viet history.
The Co Loa Ancient Citadel was built with amazingly creative construction skills as well as architecture. And the spiral architecture of the citadel is not found anywhere else in Vietnam.
What to see, things to do
Co Loa Ancient Citadel is a complex of 60 historical relics of which 7 sites are listed as Vietnam’s National Relics under special governmental protection policy. The total area of protection is 500 hectares.
1/ Co Loa Ancient Citadel
The citadel measures 46 hectares with three major layers (Inner, Middle and Outer) and with the surrounding walls of 2m high. The total length of the walls is over 15km. The citadel has a unique spiral architecture with system of moats and rivers around.
2/ An Duong Vuong Temple (Den Thuong, Upper Temple)
3/ General Cao Lo Temple
4/ My Chau Shrine (or My Chau Temple)
5/ My Chau – Trong Thuy Water Well
It is the water well where the couple My Chau Trong Thuy supposedly committed suicide.
6/ Co Loa Pagoda
The pagoda was from the 17th century.
Annual Festival
The annual festival of the Co Loa Citadel is held on the 6th of the First Lunar Month to commemorate great service of King An Duong Vuong as well as the workers who built this citadel.
How to get there
The Co Loa Ancient Citadel is 18km northeast of Hanoi. From the city center we can cross the Red River via either the Nhat Tan, Chuong Duong or Vinh Tuy to travel to the site. A tour of the Co Loa complex takes from two hours to half a day.
